Friday Participation Credit March 5: Accessories, File Management and Word
Follow along with my in-class demonstration to practice with Word, Paint,
Print Screen, and file management. This material is covered in Windows Projects 3 and 4
and Word Projects 1 and 2 in Dozer's
Quintessential Guide to Computer Literacy.
Word Project 1 Creating a Document
and Project 2 Editing a Document (5 points)
- Start the browser and go to
www.dozer.pannell.com. Click the
My New Job link.
- Drag to select the text (not the picture)
and copy it.
- Start Word
- Paste the text from the web page into the
document. Use the Paste Options button to select Keep Text Only.
- Press Ctrl+A from the keyboard to select
the entire document. Click No Spacing in the Styles group on the Home tab.
- Save the document as Mar5participation in
My Documents (or on a USB drive if you want to keep it)
- In the first sentence, insert the word
beautiful in front of the word picture. Spell it wrong on purpose
and then right-click to correct it.
- In the second sentence, delete would say
that I
- In the fifth sentence, replace 100%
with the words one-hundred percent.
- Insert two blank lines above the title.
- Type your name in the topmost blank line so
that there is a blank line between your name and the first paragraph.
- Correct any spelling and grammar errors
- Use the Replace feature to replace each
instance of the word lie with fib (do not replace words
containing lie such as belief)
- Use the thesaurus to replace the word
dumbfounded with a synonym
- Switch to the browser window.
- Right-click on the image of Dozer using the
computer
- Click Copy on the shortcut menu
- Switch to the Word window.
- Click between your name and the first
paragraph. Paste the image (Press Ctrl+V from the keyboard, right-click and
choose Paste or click the Paste button on the Home tab).
- Center the image.
- Click the Office button, then Print Preview
- Close Print Preview and resize the image if
everything doesn't fit nicely on one page.
- Save the document.
File Management (5 points)
- Start the Paint Accessory. Use the tools to change colors, etc. Write your
name somewhere in the graphic.
- Save the graphic in My Documents as Mar5bmp
- Change the graphic a little, then save it as a type .GIF file named
Mar5gif. Close Paint.
- Start My Computer.
- Turn on the Folders pane if it is not already displayed by clicking the
Folders button.
- Create a new folder in My Documents called Mar5. If you are
at home, use a USB drive or diskette.
- Copy the Mar5bmp graphic file to the Mar5 folder.
- Move (not Copy) the Mar5gif file to the Mar5folder.
- Go to your Word document. Position the insertion point at the end of the
document by pressing Ctrl+End.
- Press Ctrl+Enter to create a hard page break.
- Switch back to My Computer and display the contents of the Mar5 folder.
- Rename the Mar5gif file to Mar5compressed
- Display the information in detail view.
- Press the Print Screen key on the keyboard.
- Switch to the Word document. Paste the screen
snapshot into the end of the document.
- Switch back to the My Computer window. Display the contents of the My
Documents folder.
- Delete the Mar5bmp graphic and any other files you may have
stored there that you don't need anymore by dragging them to the recycle bin.
- Press the Print Screen key on the keyboard. Switch to your Word document
and paste the image.
- Save the document. Close Word
- Log onto Etudes. Go to Assignments, Tests and Surveys. Click the link
for today and begin the participation credit assignment.
- Switch back to My Computer. Open the Recycle Bin.
- In your the Etudes answer box, answer the following questions:
- How many items are in the Recycle Bin on the computer you are working
on?
- How do you remove files from the Recycle Bin so they can no longer be
opened?
- How do you know if there are items in the Recycle Bin?
23. In Etudes, Browse for Mar5participation and Upload it. Click the Finish
button when you are done. Close all open windows and shut down Windows if you
are working in the computer lab.
