CSIT58 Friday Assignment 2: Word, Paint and File Management

Due March 12. Late deadline March 19.

This assignment covers the information in Windows Projects 3 and 4 and Word Projects 1 and 2 in Dozer's Quintessential Guide to Computer Literacy. There are 3 parts:

Part 1 Discussion (5 points)

What did you think about the editorial from Assignment 1 "Brats protesting at the UC gates need to buck up"? Did you agree with the author? Why or why not? What has your experience going to college been like. Do you plan to transfer to a university? How do you feel about your prospects for doing so?

  1. Create a New Topic in the Assignment 2 Going to College discussion.
  2. (1 point) In the subject line, give your commentary a descriptive title.
  3. (3 points) In the body of the message, write at least one paragraph giving your opinion and why you feel the way you do.
  4. (1 point) Read another student's posting. Comment about his opinion and how it is similar to or different from yours.

The discussion score will be recorded in the Discussion Tool.

Part 2 Word (10 points)

This assignment must be saved in a document and uploaded. Start a new Word document, type in your name and answer the questions, numbering clearly.

1. (3 points)  Click the link to open the editorial in PDF format "While You Tried to Sleep". Choose 3 words from the articles to find synonyms and antonyms for. Select complex words. Type the word in your document. Then use the Thesaurus to find a synonym that would fit as a substitution. Type the synonym next to the word. Then find the antonym and type that next to the word.

Type the sentences for 2-6 into your Word document as they appear below. Word sometimes will mark the grammar errors after you type. Use the Grammar tool to correct the errors (Exercise 14 on page D-10 in Dozer's Guide). Fix any errors even if the grammar checker did not catch it.

2. He gone there for the party.

3. Who's car is it?

4. Its my car.

5. Dozer don't have a ball to play with.

6. Dozer and me went to the park.

7. Describe the difference in the steps you take in Word to COPY text to a new location in a document and to MOVE text to a new location.

8. It can be hard for people with disabilities to use the mouse, especially if their movements are jerky. The keyboard is easier for them. Go to the Select Text help in Microsoft Office Online at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HA100964021033.aspx. Look at the information on the page under "Select Text Using the Keyboard." How can you use the F8 key to substitute for mouse operations when selecting words, lines, paragraphs and the document? You can copy/paste the answer.

Spell and grammar check all of your work, then save as Asn2. Click Browse and locate the document, then Upload in Etudes Assignments.

Part 3 File Management (15 points)

In this exercise you will practice managing files and folders. To show that you did the steps, you will make a copy of what is on the screen with the Print Screen key on your keyboard and paste it in the Paint program. On some keyboards, the Print Screen key may have a different label or you may need to press another key with Print Screen. All PCs have this feature.

The My Documents folder is called Documents in Windows Vista. All of the "My"s have been dropped from the names in Vista. These instructions leave out the "My."

  1. Start the Paint program. (Choose Start, All Programs, Accessories, then Paint)
  2. Start Computer and create a folder called GreenEnergy on your USB drive or in Documents on your hard drive.
  3. Create 4 folders under GreenEnergy named Solar, Bio, Wind and Wave.
  4. Switch to an Internet browser window and go to www.google.com. Click the Images link and search for an image relating to wave energy.
  5. The result screen will show thumbnail images (small samples). Pick one of the smaller images and click on it to display the real image. Right-click the image and choose Save Picture (Image) As from the shortcut menu. Save the image in the Wave folder.
  6. Switch to your Computer window. Open the Wave folder and copy (not move) the graphic to the GreenEnergy folder.
  7. Rename the copy of the graphic in the GreenEnergy folder to WavePower. Make sure you do not change the file extension (most likely .jpg or .gif).
  8. Delete the Bio folder.
  9. Display the folders pane at the left side of the Computer window by clicking the Folders button (XP) or by clicking the Folders arrow (Vista). Make sure the folder display for GreenEnergy is expanded by clicking the + sign (XP) or right arrow (Vista) next to GreenEnergy.
  10. Click the GreenEnergy folder in the Folders pane to display the contents in the right. Press the Print Screen key on your keyboard. It looks like nothing happened, but a graphic of the screen is saved to the clipboard. On a laptop, you may need to press another key in combination with Print Screen.
  11. Switch to the Paint program. Choose Edit from the menu bar, and then select Paste. A graphic of the Computer window should appear in the Paint screen.
  12. On the Paint menu bar, select File then Save As. In the Save As window, under Save In, select Desktop from the list box. In File name, type in Asn2file1. In Save as type, use the list box to select JPEG. Finally, click on the Save button.
  13. Switch to your Computer window and display the contents of the Wave folder. Press the Print Screen key on your keyboard.
  14. Switch to the Paint program. Choose Edit from the menu bar, and then select Paste. A graphic of the Computer window should appear in the Paint screen.
  15. On the Paint menu bar, select File then Save As. In the Save As window, under Save In, select Desktop from the list box. In File name, type in Asn2file2. In Save as type, use the list box to select JPEG. Finally, click on the Save button. Exit the Paint program.
  16. In Etudes part 3, Browse for the Asn2file1 and upload it. Repeat for Asn2file2.

Click Finish when you are ready for me to grade the assignment.
