Read the Projects in Dozer's Quintessential Guide to Computer Literacy while you are in front of the computer and practice the steps as needed.

Part 1: Study Questions (20 points)

Type the answers to the following questions into a document in Word. Number each answer. Do not repeat the question.

1. (2 points) Howstuffworks is a useful web site with information about a lot of topics, computers included. Go to http://www.howstuffworks.com . Click the link for Computer, then Internet. Locate an article on how Wikis work. Answer the following questions:

a. What is a Wiki?

b. What is the difference between a blog and a wiki?

2. (2 points) There are many web sites dedicated to downloading music, programs and movies. Downloading means that you get a copy of a file from any other computer and store it on your computer. Sometimes these downloads are free. But they can violate copyright laws and you may be sued. Legal downloading sites usually cost money. There are digital jukeboxes, Internet radio programs, music and movies for download at reasonable prices.

Go to the search site http://www.bing.com and do a web search for download movies. You will see many Internet services for downloading movies. Some of them charge, and some of them are free.

a. List two different legal movie downloading services and their prices

b. Some of the sites offer streaming video. Search the web to answer the question: What is streaming video?

3. (3 points) Ask is a search site that allows you to type in questions in English sentences, instead of using keywords and operators. Go to http://www.ask.com and use it to find answers to the following questions:.

a. What is SKYPE?

b. What company offers SKYPE? How much does it cost? What equipment do you need?

Use the techniques from the reading on constructing efficient searches to answer the following questions:

4. (3 points) Go to http://www.bing.com and click the News link. Search for reports on cyber attacks.

a. Choose one of the articles. Give the title of the article and a brief one-paragraph summary.

b. Copy and paste the URL of the news story. Click in the Address bar to highlight the URL, choose Edit, Copy in the menu bar (or press Ctrl+C on the keyboard). Switch to your document, make sure you have the number 4b. and then choose Edit, Paste in the menu bar (or press Ctrl+V on the keyboard).

5. (1 point) A router is used to connect multiple computers to the Internet. A wireless router is nice for home computer networks because you don't have to tack up wires or break into walls. Go to http://www.google.com. Click the Images link above the Search text box. Search for a graphic of a wireless router. The first graphics you see in the results are thumbnails, tiny versions of the graphic. Click the thumbnail to display the full size image. Right click the mouse and select copy. Paste the image into your document and resize it so that it is reasonably small.

6. (5 points) Spoofing, phishing and pharming are threats to your privacy online

a. From the Google Search page, choose the Web link. Click on Advanced Search. In the first line of Advanced Search, with all these words, type: spoofing phishing pharming
Click Search. Notice that Google places spoofing phishing pharming in the Search Box. How many results were there?

b. (2 points) Use Advanced Search again. This time, leave the with all these words line blank, and in the line that says one or more of these words type spoofing, then after the OR type phishing, then after the OR type pharming
Click Search. Which search produced more results, a. or b.? Why?

c. Use Advanced Search to find pages that mention pharming but do not include the words spoofing or phishing. After you click Search, what does Google put in the Search Box?

d. Use one of the links to find a definition of phishing. What is the definition?

7. (3 points) You can generate your own electricity for your house.

a. Use Google Web search to find web pages that discuss this. Do not use Advanced Search. Type your query directly into the Search Box.

Use the query:  alternative energy home solution

How many results were there?

b. Use the ~ directly in front of a keyword that may have synonyms. Which word did you put the ~ on?  How many results were there?

c. Why is there a difference in the number of results? Give an example of an actual synonym that was used instead of the original word.

8. What is the difference between Cc and Bcc?

Save your document as Task4 and upload it to Tasks, Tests and Surveys in Etudes.
