Did you ever wonder what world events took place during the month you were born (besides your birth)? For example, what happened with respect to politics, world affairs, and the economy? What made headline news? Were there any scientific breakthroughs? What was on television and at the box office? Were there any famous people born? Did anyone famous die? What songs topped the charts? What was happening in the world of sports? Research the newsworthy events that took place during the month and year you were born (i.e. July 1981) by looking through newspapers, magazines, searching the Web, and/or interviewing family and friends. Part 2 Discussion (5 points)

The following is information from Page 99 GROUP DISCUSSION in Understanding Computers:

The VeriChip is a tiny chip about the size of a grain of rice that is designed to be implanted under a person's skin, such as on the forearm. Each VeriChip contains a unique number that can be read when a proprietary scanner is passed over the implanted chip. That number can be used in conjunction with a database to access data, such as to provide hospital emergency room personnel with health information about an unconscious patient. The VeriChip can also be used for access control to secure areas; future possibilities include access control to personal computers, cars and homes, as well as to authenticate users for ATM and credit card transactions. Versions of the VeriChip with GPS capabilities could also be used to find missing individuals, such as kidnap victims and lost Alzheimer's patients. Although privacy-rights advocates worry that a chip like the VeriChip could be misused, others view the chip no differently than a medical ID bracelet and they are not concerned because it is voluntary. What do you think? Would you be willing to be "chipped" if it made some tasks (such as unlocking your home or car) easier or some types of transactions (such as ATM withdrawals) more secure? Do you think it would make these tasks easier or more secure?

1. Do an internet search to find a web page about the use of the VeriChip. Find one that has not been posted about yet by another student.

2. Go to the Task 4 Discussion in Discussion and Private Messages. Start a New Topic.

3. In the subject line of your message, put the title of the web page. Be sure this is correct so other students can quickly see which pages have already been used.

4. In the body of your message give a one paragraph summary of the information on the page. Include the URL

5. In another paragraph, give your opinion about the use of these chips.

6. Reply to another student with a comment on his or her opinion.
