The following is information from Page 269 GROUP DISCUSSION in Understanding Computers:
Emotion Recognition Software An emerging application is emotion recognition software which tries to read people's emotions. An emotion recognition system uses a camera and software to analyze an individual's face and attempts to recognize his or her current emotion. The first expected application of such a system is for ATM machines, since they already have cameras installed. Possibilities include changing the advertising display, based on the customer's emotional response to displayed advertising, and enlarging the screen text if the customer appears to be squinting. It is not surprising that privacy advocates are concerned about the emotions of citizens being read in public locations without their consent. Proponents of the technology argue that it is no different than when human tellers or store clerks interpret customer's emotions and modify their treatment of the customer accordingly. Is this a worthy new technology or just a potential invasion of privacy? What are the pros and cons of such a system from a business point of view and from a customer point of view? Are there any safeguards that could be implemented to alleviate the disadvantages? What other potential uses for such a system might there be besides the ones mentioned in this project? Would you object to using an ATM machine with emotion-recognition capabilities?
1. Do an internet search to find a web page about recognition software. Software is used to recognize many things, not just emotions. Find a web page that has not been posted about yet by another student.
2. Go to the Task 3 Discussion in Discussion and Private Messages. Start a New Topic.
3. In the subject line of your message, put the title of the web page. Put it exactly as it appears on the page so other students can quickly see that the site has been used.
4. In the body of your message give a one paragraph summary of the information on the page.
5. In another paragraph, give your opinion about the use of this software, considering the kinds of issues raised in the textbook.
6. Reply to another student with a comment on his or her opinion.
Application Software Quiz (15 points)
Take a multiple choice quiz on Chapter 6 in Understanding Computers. You can only take the quiz once but there is no time limit.
