CSIT58 Friday Task #1 Assignment: Using the Online Classroom

30 Points Due date: September 12. Late deadline September 26.

Next, do the assignment. If you don't have the textbook yet, you can still complete the assignment using the information in the PowerPoint slides and by searching the Internet. In this assignment you will:

Log in to Etudes and click the link for Tasks, Tests and Surveys. Click Task 1 and begin the assignment. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the assignment and quiz. Once you click Finish, there is no way to go back and change it. If you realize you have made an error you need to email me about it. You may complete the parts of the assignment in any order. You can enter and exit as you wish.

Part 1: Introduction Discussion 5 points

  1. Click the Discussion and Private Messages button on the left side of the page.
  2. Click the link for the Task 1 Introduce Yourself topic.
  3. Read my post and others, then click New Topic
  4. Write a paragraph about yourself. Read over your post carefully for errors and spell check. Remember that everyone in the class will see your message after you post it. Don't post anything that is too personal, and no profanity please. You are not required to attach a photo. Click the Submit button when you are finished.
  5. Read another student's introduction and Reply to it. Note down the name of the person you replied to. You will need it to turn in the assignment in Etudes.

Part 2: Syllabus and Etudes Study Questions (18 points)

Answer the questions below in a Word document. You do not need to repeat the question, just number each answer carefully.

1. (4 points) Go to Overview of Critical Thinking at http://www.coping.org/write/percept/critical.htm#Major and then click the What is Critical Thinking? link. Read the items under "Characteristics of People who Excel at Critical Thinking"

a. Which one of these characteristics do you feel that you are the strongest in? Why?
b. Which one of these characteristics could you use the most improvement in? Why?

Click the link to open a PDF file "Examples of Discussion Board Etiquette for Online Courses." This requires Adobe Acrobat to open. If you need to download and install it, go to http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html . Use the information in the PDF file to answer questions 4 and 5.

2. (2 points) Choose a guideline from the paper. Repeat the guideline and then make up an example of a post that would violate that rule. You can copy/paste the guideline from the document by clicking the Select Text button and then dragging over it. Right-click the selected text and then choose Copy to Clipboard from the menu that appears. Go back to your Word document and Paste the text into your document. Then type your example.

3. (3 points) Go to http://etudesproject.org/gateway/server_info.html and look at the requirements for software and hardware.

a. How much memory should your PC have?
b. What browser software can you use on your PC?
c. What should your configuration be for Javascript, cookies and pop-up windows?

Go into our Etudes classroom and click Resources. Click StudentGuide.pdf to open the Etudes User Guide. Find the answers to the following questions in the guide. You can search for text by clicking typing it in the box in the toolbar at the top of the document. Use the Find Next or Previous buttons to move to occurrences of the text.

5. I will release assignment grades after the late submission deadline. How will you review your results and see my grading feedback?

6. What does Mark for Review do in an assignment?

Questions 8 through 18 are based on the class syllabus.

7. An assignment is worth 40 points and you turn it a week and a half after the date it is assigned. You do it perfectly. What will be your score?

8. Make up a schedule for when you will spend the required number of hours on this class each week. Give the day and time.

9. What are the names of the textbooks that are required for this class? Do you have them yet? If not, when will you get them?

10. What software programs will we study in this class? Do you have them on your home computer? If not, how do you plan to complete the work?

11. List the ways you can contact me outside of class if you need help.

12. What will happen if you turn in an assignment that is almost the same as another student's work?

Save the document as with your answers as Task1. Turn in the assignment file by clicking the Tasks, Tests and Surveys link in Etudes. Click the link for Task 1 Assignment. For Part 1, type the name of the person you replied to in the answer box. For Part 2, Browse for your document and Upload it.

Part 3: Windows Quiz 7 points

In the Task 1 Assignment in Etudes, you will be presented with 7 multiple choice questions covering the information in Windows Projects 1 and 2 in Dozer's Quintessential Guide to Computer Literacy. If you don't have the textbook yet, you can find the answers to the questions by searching the Internet. You may already know many of the answers from your experience using Windows already. The questions are very basic.

Click Finish when you are ready to turn in the assignment.
