Part 2 Discussion (5 points)

The following is from page 669 in Understanding Computers:

According to a study by the Missouri School of Journalism at Columbia's University of Missouri, many Internet users are willing to accept spam in return for a discount on their ISP bill, and the study found that the users paying the highest rates for Internet access were more willing to trade spam for monetary savings. With the amount of spam-blocking taking place at the ISP level and the proliferation of third-party software to block spam, pop-up ads, and other forms of onscreen marketing, it makes one wonder what the long-term effect will be on online advertising and the Web in general. If these types of marketing techniques eventually become unprofitable, will free Web content begin to disappear? Is paying Internet users to receive spam or other types of advertisements a viable option? Would you be willing to pay higher rates for Internet access or pay for an increasing amount of Web content if you were guaranteed an ad-free and spam-free environment? Just as with television, some amount of advertising is typically necessary in order to support free content. What do you think is the optimal balance for the Web?

1. Search for a web page that addresses the issue of what to do about spam or pop-up ads. It should be one that no one else has posted about yet.

2. (4 points) Start a New Topic in the Task 12 Internet Advertising discussion. Put the title of the page in your subject line. In the body of the message, include the following:

a. The URL pointing directly to the web page.

b. A one-paragraph summary of the ideas on the page

c. Another paragraph where you give your opinion about spam and pop-up ads.

3. (1 point) Reply to another student's post and comment on their article and opinion. Note down the name of the person you replied to and enter it in the answer box for this part in Tasks, Tests and Surveys.
